What is a catapult?

A catapult is a mechanism used to launch projectiles a long distance. It consists of a strong frame with a lever attached to it. The projectile, usually a rock or a ball, is placed in a sling attached to the end of the lever. When the lever is pulled back, the sling stretches and the projectile is held in place.

When the lever is released, the sling tightens and the projectile is propelled forward. The catapult can be adjusted for different distances and speeds by changing the angle of the lever, the strength used to pull it back, and the type of projectile used.

Catapults were first used in ancient warfare as a weapon to launch heavy objects at enemy fortifications. They were also used to launch incendiary devices and even animals at the enemy.

Today, catapults are still used for recreation and education. Some people build and launch their own catapults as a hobby. They are also commonly used in physics classes to teach students about mechanics, force, and motion.
